In addition to storing and releasing energy, the more the spring is deformed, the greater the force required to further deform. Using the example of a conventional compression spring, the more times the compression spring is applied, the greater the force required to compress the spring.

Spring constant
This spring constant determines how much force will be required to deform the spring. The standard international (SI) unit of measurement for spring constants is Newtons/meter, but in North America they are usually measured in pounds per inch. A higher spring constant means that the spring is harder and vice versa.
The spring constant can be determined based on four parameters:
· Wire diameter: the diameter of the wire including the spring
· Coil diameter: diameter of each coil, measuring the tightness of the coil
· Free length: the length of the spring at rest
· Number of effective coils: number of coils that can be freely expanded and contracted
The material constituting the spring also functions in determining the spring constant and other physical properties of the spring.
When manufacturers produce springs, they need to know the performance of the spring. For many mechanical applications, small differences in spring behavior will determine if the system is working.
All spring design features work in determining useful applications for any given spring. When the manufacturer dials the settings of the spring winder, they are not just guessing.
